Instead, I thought of words that described the college experience I wanted, and I typed them into Google.

I didn't find anything.

Why? Because most university websites are not optimized for search engines.

Ken Lyons of Wordstream talks about this in his article, "Top SEO College Websites." He points out that many colleges rely on their brand to attract new students. That works if those prospective students start their search already knowing about your school's brand.

But what if that student is like I was? I wasn't looking for a brand, I was looking for a list of qualities and attributes, like: "creative writing BA," "small class size," "healthy cafeteria." Why didn't some combination of those keywords lead me to my perfect school? Not because it doesn't exist, but because the school hadn't made its website easy for search engines to crawl. And if a website is hard for a search engine to crawl, then the website doesn't show up in search results.

Read Lyons' whole article here.

- Alyssa Keysor
Web Works Education coordinator

GLOBAL STRATEGIES FOR SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION & WEB MARKETING

What your school needs to know about online marketing!
